This database relies heavily on javascript to display information and is best viewed in Internet Explorer.

Firefox has trouble displaying the composer names in the Timeline view. I am sorry for any problems this may cause.

Viewing Modes (Lenses):

This database is composed of several "Views" available from the list at the top of the timeline. You can select from:

  1. Timeline View: This view shows all of the composers in the database in a spatial format that shows their place in music history. The timeline can be clicked and dragged to view any place in the timeline. The various eras are color coded.
  2. Map Views: There are views that pull up Google maps of the composer's birthplace, place of death, and place of burial (if known)
  3. All Info View: This is the view to use to get additional information for research purposes on the composer. It allows you to see all of the research links, audio links, and other information that the database has in its file.

Finding The Information You Need (Using Facets):

You can select only the composers in certain eras or certain individual composers by clicking the selectors in the right hand column. These selectors work with all views in the database. Note that selecting an item from one facet will limit the choices that remain in the other facet.

You can also enter an individual name, phrase, or type of music into the search box in the top of the right column to search for any composers that have that word associated with them.

If you run out of room on the page when viewing lists of information in the View All Info facet you may need to open the database in a new window. Click here to view the database in a separate window. This is also helpful for teachers who want to use the database with a video projector in class.

Please contact the MusicEdMagic webmaster if you have any problems with this database.
