In order for any band to improve its performance they must be fully aware of what they truly sound like. As performers and music educators we often perceive the performance to sound differently than it truely does to the listener.  By recording and listening to your band or small ensemble you can take your band to the new level of musicianship by finding the problems in your performance and fixing them.
 
It seems like it should be a simple task to grab a microphone, plug it into a stereo, and hit record. If this is how you make recordings, it is doubtful that you will ever get an accurate reproduction of what your band or ensemble sounds like. This series of articles will focus on how to make a recording that could be used for critiquing your rehearsals and also for recording a performance for production and distribution.
