Band Web Site Awards Every few weeks we will profile a new high school band web site that in the author's opinion is well designed, well planned, and well maintained. The selection criteria have been chosen specifically because of their relevance to the concept of good overall web site design.
The required criteria for receiving the award are:
- Home page must be attractive, clean, and easy to navigate
- Important information of interest to students and parents must be easily accessible
- Information must be up to date and relevant
- Sites that are not regularly updated will not be considered
- Total home page size (including images) must be under 200k (remember that not everyone has broadband yet!)
- Use a tool such as the Web Page Analyzer to check the size and usability of your page
- Use a program such as Photoshop or another image editor to minimize image size to save on bandwidth
Additional criteria that may be taken into consideration include:
- Does the Band own its own domain name making it easier to find the site?
- Does the site follow the concepts of:
- Proximity - Similar items (such as items related to a specific ensemble) need to be grouped in the same area of the page.
- Contrast - Seperate portions of the page should have a different feel based on the information they are presenting.
- Alignment - are the text and images aligned in a pleasing way? Aligning everything to the center is almost never a good idea.
- Repetition - does the site follow the same basic template for each page?
