The Comprehensive Musicianship Project The main idea of the Comprehensive Musicianship Project is to help you
be a better teacher by helping you discover new and fun ways to teach
concepts and skills that are found in our daily music repertoire. The
template used to create Comprehensive Musicanship Project style lesson
plans is fairly straight forward, but in order to really use it to its
fullest potential you have to do a little research. Don't worry though, it isn't painful!
Analysis of Your Music: The Comprehensive Musicianship Project Way
The first part of CMP research has to do with simply analyzing your music. In my case I absolutely hated analysis when I was in college, but I came to find out that CMP analysis need not be as stringent as it was for your college theory classes. In general, you analyze the piece in terms of form, function, and any special concepts that might be obvious that you might want to teach in your classroom. For example, if you are analyzing a piece for an elementary band you probably don't need to take close notice of whether the composer wrote any Picardy Thirds into the score. You simply would not be teaching such things to 5th or 6th graders. However, if the piece contains a canon, call and response, or other concepts that you are actively studying in your student's lesson book then these items might be some you wish to explore further.
In the final analysis you are looking for what the piece of music is BEST at teaching to your students. In every piece there should be at least one thing that stands out that you can grab on to and use as a teachable moment in your classroom. The Comprehensive Musicianship Project defines this as the "Heart" of the music. Analysis to find your heart statement does not need to be painful, in fact, it can be strangely enjoyable as you discover the little nuggets of musical genius that good composers write into their compositions.
