Like many traditional Christmas songs and carols, the music and words to Joy to the World were composed by different people at very different times in history. The lyrics to Joy To The World were first written in 1719 by Isaac Watts , a well educated Englishman with a propensity for using rhyme even in casual spech. Nearly a hundred years later another Englishman, Lowell Mason , took Watts' poem and set it to music. The tune closely resembles Handel's Messiah in some ways, but it is not an exact transcription. Joy To The World was arranged with different lyrics by a gentleman named W.W. Phelps in the mid 1830's for use by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints but the new lyrics were not widely used and it quickly fell out of favor.

The lyrics (words) to Joy To The World:
Joy to the world, The Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.
Joy to the world, The Saviour reigns
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.
