The keyboard is powered by the computer's Universal Serial Bus (USB) port so no additional power supply is necessary. This, in turn, makes the 49-e very portable without the need to worry about additional cables or connectors. All power and communications are routed through the single USB cable (included).

Keystation 49-e MIDI Controller Features:

At first glance the 49-e looks rather spartan. There are no speakers, no LCD screens , and only three buttons grouped together alongside pitch bend, modulation, and volume controls. The beauty of this arrangement is that despite the seeming lack of controls, the keyboard still has the ability to do basic modifications through the use of an Advanced Functions button and special key combinations. Transposition and channel selection are all available and easily reset should the user make a mistake. All of these modifications are detailed quite well in the clear and easy to read owners manual.

Who would the Keystation 49-e be useful for?

Schools and private individuals that are interested in a solid, easy to use keyboard without a lot of frills and unused features are ripe candidates for using the 49-e. The small footprint of the 49 key keyboard allow it to fit on most computer desks (although M-Audio also makes smaller models as well). The single USB cable connection allows users to easily remove and set the 49-e aside when not in use.

Drawbacks of the Keystation 49-e:

While most users would not find this a hinderance, the keys on the 49-e require slightly more pressure to move than a traditional piano keyboard. Moreover, the keys (although pressure sensitive) are not weighted as more advanced and more expensive models are.
