I have put together a listing of all of the free Christmas sheet music for clarinet that we have here on MusicEdMagic.  All of these files are free and available for use under creative commons licensing.  Please pass the word on about this collection.

All of the files in this category are written with beginning clarinetists in mind.  I am a public school band director and wrote most of these selections out to use with my beginning band students.  Please let me know if there are any titles missing from this list that you would like to have me work on adding for the future.

For those that play the drums or mallet percussion instrument such as the bells, marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, and similar instruments this article provides a list of free Christmas sheet music for dozens of different Christmas carols.  Please note that the drum music is pretty basic, mostly written as accompaniments to full band arrangments that I have used in my classroom.  However, for those that play the bells or other mallet instruments there are also files here that will allow you to play the melody on your favorite holiday songs.

 

The flute sheet music on this page consists of PDF and Sibelius SIB music notation files of traditional Christmas carols.  The free Christmas sheet music for flute contained on this page is released under the creative commons attribution licensing and can be edited or used as needed for personal or educational uses.

Please note that all of these sheet music files are written for beginner flute players and can also be played by most oboe players as well as those playing the bells.

The pieces of free sheet music included as links on this page are originally written for Clarinet, HOWEVER THEY ARE PITCHED SUCH THAT ANY BEGINNING PIANIST CAN PLAY THEM.  In other words, when you download them and see that they are labeled as clarinet there is no need to panic.  Most notes center between middle C and the C one octave above.  For Christmas carols and other Christmas sheet music for other instruments please visit our main sheet music list page here at Music Education Magic.

 

All of the melodies listed in the chart below are written with beginner saxophone players in mind.  Any alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, or baritone saxophone player should be able to play them with only one or two years of training.  Normal playing range is one octave starting on G for the altos and the octave above middle C for the tenors.

These files can be used for educational or personal use.  The Sibelius files can be opened and edited in the Sibelius music notation editor.

Trombonists often get left out in the cold (so to speak) when it comes to having the melody on Christmas carols and other seasonal music.  I wrote out the main melody to all of the Christmas carols below and pitched it specifically for beginning trombone and baritone players.  The melodies are simple, most stay within an easily playable range for beginners, and all are free to use for personal or educational use.

 

Set to a poem written by American scholar Katharine Lee Bates in 1893, America The Beautiful has a profound history. Joined together with the Francis Ward hymn tune, Materna, America The Beautiful began a long rise in public opinion, and in similar fashion to another patriotic hymn, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, America The Beautiful was considered on several occasions to be a candidate for our national hymnsong.

The Stars And Stripes Forever is one of John Philip Sousa's most famous and most often played works. Written in 1896 while on a trip to Europe, the familiar strains of this tune today are commonplace at celebrations, band concerts, and patriotic events across the United States of America.

 

Believed to have been written in 1755 by British surgeon Dr. Richard Schackburg, Yankee Doodle has become one of the most well known pieces of music in the United States. This document contains the sheet music to Yankee Doodle in both PDF and Sibilius Scorch formats. Parts are available for all common concert band instruments including voice.

As hymnsongs go, Amazing Grace is one of the most recognized of all traditional Christian hymns. It has been used in many ways over the last two hundred years since its composition in 1772 by John Newton, a former slave trader who had converted to Christianity. It has always been seen as a somber, Christian hymnsong with strong references to human rights and freedom.

Based on an old Swedish folk melody, Carl Boberg penned the lyrics to the hymn, How Great Thou Art in 1885.  Since then the hymn has become one of the most well known and cherished Christian hymnsongs in the world.  This page contains links to PDF versions of How Great Thou Art arranged for common concert band instruments as well as vocalists.  The vocal part includes all of the accepted verses to the song.

While Jesus Loves Me is not used very much in the public schools, I still remember trying to play it on my trombone as a child and fishing around for the notes until I got it right. It is one of the most often sung hymns, especially by children, and with summer camp and other similar events happening all around the country I thought it might be nice to have a printable set of music should the need arise. I even threw in parts for the Violin just in case!

Free sheet music for the French traditional song, Alouette.

In 1859 Daniel Emmett wrote the well known song titled Dixie (originally titled I Wish I Was In Dixie and also known as Dixie's Land).  It immediately became quite popular in the North, and spread southward eventually being adopted as the national anthem of the Confederacy.

Whether sung in church, Sunday School, or around the campfire, Kum Ba Ya is another of the most well known hymnsongs in American culture. Sung around the world in various forms, Kum Ba Ya (also occasionally spelled Kum Bah Yah or Kum Bah Ya) is easy to sing or play on any instrument. Mary Had A Little Lamb is one of the most beloved nursery rhymes ever written.  Attributed to writer Sarah Josepha Hale the rhyme became so popular that a short time later Lowell Mason put the song to music and it has graced our lives ever since.  It's origins go back to the year 1830 and was indeed based on an actual event of a lamb following a young girl named Mary to school. 

Over the years the musical version of the song has evolved a bit, with the original Mason tune being adapted to many other childrens songs such as Merrily We Roll Along.  Both songs share the same basic tune and style yet tell completely different stories.  The song is also one of the first songs learned by most new musicians, due to its simplicity and ease by which it is learned on almost any instrument.  Most beginning instrument texts include Mary Had A Little Lamb or Merrily We Roll Along as one of their first song selections.

Adopted as the so-called theme song of the California gold rush, Oh, Susanna is one of the most recognized of all American folk songs. Written in 1847 by Stephen Foster, it later became a very popular song that is still sung today in classrooms across the world. Over the River and Through the Woods is a folk song originally composed by American abolitionist, Lydia Maria Child and written in or slightly prior to 1844.  Many different singers and songwriters have done their own arrangements of this song over the last century, but the original children's song version is still the most prominent and well known.  Originally written as a Thanksgiving song it also occasionally is heard with verses relating to Christmas as well.

It's summer time and along with all the great patriotic music our country has other traditional summer songs. One of the most recognized and often sung is Take Me Out To The Ball Game. I recently began a project to write down and transcribe all of my favorite old summer camp songs from my many years spent as a camper and staff member at a Boy Scout summer camp.  The Grand Old Duke of York is one of those favorites and is provided here as free sheet music in PDF format.  The document contains both the lyrics and the actual written sheet music to the song, and can be sung or played on a number of different instruments including trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, or oboe.  Other instruments can play it as well but will have to transpose it into a note range that works for them.  Enjoy!

Ah, good old Alice the Camel.  A classic children’s song if there ever was one.  Sung around campfires and in classrooms alike it is one of the most well known children’s songs around.  For the actual sheet music to this song and an MP3 audio file of the melody scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Sometimes known as It Ain’t Gonna Rain No Mo’, this classic of American folk songs is still sung today by thousands of children all over the world.  An interesting restored audio file of a 1920’s version of the original song sung by Ukelele artist Wendell Hall can be found along with some images over at the Internet Archive.  The fun thing about this recording is the lyrics, and it goes to show just how much this song has changed over the last hundred or more years.
