eMedia has come out with some great pieces of software for learning musical instruments at home. So many software makers or online web sites crank out material that is simply junk in an effort to make a fast buck. eMedia’s My Piano continues with the companies habit of bucking that trend with a smart, clean, and easy to follow piano tutorial for beginners.

MyPiano is very similar to the previously reviewed My Guitar and eMedia Piano Method in that both share a very similar interface and methodology. In My Piano students are greeted by a talking animated piano character who guides them through all aspects of playing the piano including basic theory, rhythms, hand position, fingerings, note names, and much more. Every five to seven pages the software incorporates a game to test knowledge of the concepts taught so far. The games and the interface in general are very user friendly and age appropriate.

Progression of Instruction:

Beginning with basic piano techniques the My Piano software walks students through reading simple rhythms and songs using the black keys and finger numbers only. In the next chapter the staff is added, and students begin to learn to read music and play notes on the white keys from C to G and from F to C. Subsequent chapters add additional theory concepts and increase in difficulty.

Additional Features of My Piano:

The My Piano software includes the ability to connect to a MIDI keyboard. With an attached keyboard the software will watch the student play and inform them of any mistakes. Also included in the software is a metronome and digital audio recorder.

Drawbacks To The My Piano Software:

In general the My Piano system is very well done and very educational. As with the My Guitar product it would be nice to see the program react more appropriately to student mistakes. Rather than helping correct errors during the games the software congratulates the student and allows them to move on even when comprehension is obviously lacking. Still, the software is one of the best interactive piano training packages available. For anyone seeking to teach a young student to play but does not have access to a private teacher this My Piano is highly recommended.
