My Country 'Tis of Thee

Free Sheet Music For The Traditional Patriotic Melody, "My Country 'Tis of Thee"

This document contains the words, lyrics, and music to the traditional patriotic song, "My Country 'Tis of Thee." You can view the music or download the individual parts arranged for standard concert band instrumentation.

Prior to the acceptance of "The Star Spangled Banner" as the national anthem of the United States, "My Country Tis of Thee" was widely regarded as the national anthem throughout the late 1800's. The song is based on the national anthem of Great Britain, "God Save the Queen" , but uses lyrics written by Rev. Samuel Francis Smith in 1831.

From a musical standpoint this song is useful for teaching several musical concepts. My Country Tis of Thee has tied notes in measure two and four. Other useful concepts include 3/4 time, dotted half notes, and repeat signs.

You can view the full score of the song and listen to it using the Sibelius Scorch viewer below (requires a plugin from the Sibelius web site). You can also download individual parts in PDF or Sibelius format using the links farther down on the page.

If you cannot see the score, get the Sibelius Scorch plug-in here.

The Lyrics (Words) To "My Country Tis of Thee"

My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountainside
Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom's song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

My father's God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom's holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.

Jena Dickey  - J. S. Bach did not write this   |67.40.145.xxx |2008-03-19 16:20:20
Please make a correction on your composer/arranger line. J. S. Bach did not
write this melody. It is of unknown origin, presumably written in England about
100 years after his death. This is misleading people who believe in what you
have posted.

You're right! I have no idea how, when, or why I put Bach down on the composer
line when I was writing out this piece. I did a lot of them in one short period
of time last year and I must have messed this one up. It will take me a while
to make the changes as the original files are not accessible at the moment. I
will make the change as soon as possible. Thank you for bringing this to my
attention!
Jena Dickey  - We have all cut-n-pasted incor   |65.89.84.xxx |2008-03-27 23:53:02
Thanks, Chad. Don't feel bad. We have all cut-n-pasted incorrectly at one time
or another! Thanks for your efforts to make a lot of music available on the web.
Admirable job. ~ Jena
