Jazz, throughout its history, has often been paired with social protest. This fact is nowhere more evident than in legendary jazz drummer Max Roach’s 1960 recording entitled, We Insist! Freedom Now Suite. Bebop drumming authority Lewis Nash will be leading an all-star cast of musicians at Chicago’s Symphony Center in a recreation of this legendary jazz album.
On Friday, February 13, 2009, at 8:00pm, extraordinary jazz drummer Lewis Nash (who was once a student of the late Max Roach) will lead the following all-star cast in the recreation of this classic album.
Dee Dee Bridgewater, vocals Ira Coleman, bass Lewis Nash, drums Cecil Bridgewater, trumpet Julian Priester, trombone Ron Bridgewater, saxophone Neil Clarke, percussion Ray Mantilla, percussion Maggie Brown, vocals Miguel de la Cerna, piano Junius Paul, bass Kwame Steve Cobb, drums Sylvia de la Cerna, violin Nicole Mitchell, flute Africa Brown, Guest vocals
This concert is also a tribute to Chicago visionary Oscar Brown, Jr., who wrote the words for Roach’s album. The opening set of this concert will be led by his daughter, Maggie Brown, and will feature the following musicians:
SONGS OF MY FATHER A Tribute to Oscar Brown, Jr. Maggie Brown, vocals Miguel de la Cerna, piano Junius Paul, bass Kwame Steve Cobb, drums Sylvia de la Cerna, violin Nicole Mitchell, flute Africa Brown, vocals
As if this wasn’t enough…there will also be a pre-concert lecture given by legendary jazz critic and author Nat Hentoff.
Any student of jazz who lives near Chicago should definitely take advantage of this great opportunity. For ticket information, go to:
