Here's a nice freebie to start off the new school year! There are dozens of different beginning band method books out there to purchase, but here is a series that you can download, print, or use on a tablet for free! Read on to find out more!
Several years ago I was a big fan of a free downloadable band method called The Habits of Musicianship. You can still get it if you are interested, but it was rather radical in its approach (hence its subtitle "A Radical Approach To Begnning Band"), but the PDF Band Music website has released a new free band method they call Sound Fundamentals and written by Tom Tucker and Tom Donaldson. One of the first things you notice when opening the parts on a tablet or in a PDF reader is that the method goes beyond what a traditional lesson book provides in that "learn to play" style videos are included and embedded directly within the parts. If for some reason your reader application won't show the videos there are links provided that will open them on YouTube in a normal browser window.
Once you get into the music portion of the lessons links are provided that take the user to a page full of MP3 files that a student can play along with. The music itself is appropriate for a beginner book and the pace of things is roughly equivalent to other popular method book titles. Fingering charts, scales, and rhythm exercises are also provided at the back of each book. Parts are available for Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto, Tenor, and Bari Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Bass Guitar, Mallets, and Drums. Check them out by going over to PDF Band Music and signing up for their free membership. Then download the books you want to use and print them or load them onto your classroom set of iPads or other tablets.
